Bell Primary School is a Public Primary School located south of Bell Street in the State electorate of Northcote and the Federal electorate of Batman. This year we celebrate 90 years of education excellence but we desperately need help too; 70% of our students are in portables, we have no hall and no under-cover area large enough for the whole school to meet, play or perform and we are bursting at the seams with 1,100 square metres less floor space than we should have according to Victorian School Building Authorities guidelines.
Our enrolments have almost tripled in 10 years and the population in our neighbourhood is forecast to double in the next 25 years. This is by far the highest in Darebin and indeed most parts of Victoria with up to 2,500 new dwellings expected within 300 metres of our school in our School Neighbourhood Zone along St Georges Road.
Last year we received $2 million for urgent repairs and upgrades to the 90-year-old main building and new school master plan. The school has been neglected for so long however, that the $2 million in funding received so far is only 15% of the total estimated $13m build cost now.
