Tell them how the inadequate facilities are impacting on you, your children, their teachers and the broader community. Key points you may like to include below:

  • Bell Primary School’s enrolments have almost tripled in 10 years (from 208 students in 2008 to 526 in 2018). The school is struggling to accommodate this rapid growth due to a lack of infrastructure investment with one prep class occupying a common area;
  • 70% of students are in portables;
  • We have no hall or under-cover area large enough for the school to meet, play or perform;
  • We are bursting at the seams with 1,150 square metres less permanent floor space than a school our size should have according to the Victorian School Building Authority Fact Sheet;
  • Without significant investment now, we will be facing a crisis with independent modeling by ID Community showing the population of the Preston West area will double over the next 23 years. This is by far the highest in Darebin and indeed most parts of Victoria with up to 2,500 new dwellings expected within 300 metres of our school in the School Neighbourhood Zone along St Georges Road;
  • The school master plan, recently developed the by Victorian School Building Authority, demonstrates the infrastructure Bell Primary School deserves based on student enrolments and basic community expectations. It includes a gymnasium / hall and a new learning hub with permanent classrooms to enable 21st century enquiry based learning;
  • Students, teachers and the broader community stand to benefit from the new and improved facilities at Bell Primary School. The facilities will assist in delivering a high standard of education to our students, while providing a community asset for local community groups and sporting clubs to deliver more services;
  • To date, only 15 percent ($2 million) of the master plan has been funded which is being used for urgent repairs and upgrades to the 90-year-old main school building; and
  • Other critical elements of the master plan including a hall, (providing a sheltered space for the whole school to assemble – cost $7 million) and a learning hub, (facilitating modern, enquiry-based learning – cost $4 million), remain unfunded.
